Moving into your first own apartment is exciting. But what does this mean for health insurance? The policy is adjusted when you move out of your parents’ home. We explain why.
By the time they move out of their parents’ home, young adults receive their own insurance contract. This is because if they no longer share the same residence as their parents, they are no longer covered under the family policy. Once they inform their health insurance provider of their new address, they receive an adjusted offer. This change is a good opportunity to check if their health insurance still meets all their needs.
A new place of residence also means a new premium.
Health insurance premiums don’t always move along, as they may be higher or lower depending on the premium region. Currently, Switzerland has 42 premium regions, with each canton having at least one and up to three. In rare cases, the premium region can change even if someone just moves across the street.
Why do premium regions exist?
Premium regions exist to balance the varying healthcare costs within a canton. The Federal Department of Home Affairs (EDI) defines these regions based on the following factors:
- Level of healthcare costs in a region
- Density of hospitals, doctors, and care facilities in a region
Generally, health insurance premiums are lower in rural areas than in cities.
